Composting isn’t Rocket Science!

By : Upma Gupta

If you’re clueless about composting and think it is some complex, time consuming process only meant for botanists, we’re here to simplify the natural and easy process. First off, what is composting? Composting is the process by which we turn wet waste into usable organic manure.

Simply put, you’ve got to segregate your wet kitchen waste from dry waste. Start by maintaining two separate dustbins, one for your organic waste and the other for inorganic waste.

Now comes the real deal aka composting. You can use an earthen pot, old drawer or crate. Make sure it can be sealed but has holes for ventilation as well. Throw in all your vegetable waste, tea leaves, coffee beans, and grass or houseplants’ trimmings but avoid putting meat or fats or dairy products as they take way more time to break down.

The compost mixture needs to be mixed and turned properly on a regular basis to hasten the composting.

When the bottom of the compost manure is dark brown and rich in colour, that’s when you know that you have successfully generated your own compost. The entire procedure takes about a month to 45 days to completely generate compost. Pat yourself on the back as now you are officially a Guardian of Nature!
